Has the serious, intellectual Atlantic magazine gone tabloid?
Sure looks like it. The latest issue has Britney Spears on the cover!
While the magazine usually sticks to brain-challenging stories about politics, the economy and foreign affairs, Ms. Spears may not necessarily be a complete shocker. The mag covers cultural trends, and say what you will about Spears, but the on-her-road-to-a-comeback pop star is definitely a cultural phenomenon.
The story, “The Britney Show,” written by David Samuels, uses the coverage of Spears to show the rise of paparazzi agency X17.
Among the goodies uncovered by Samuels:
Somewhere between 60 and 70 photographers work for X17, and they’re paid anywhere from $800 to $3,000 a week. Paid tipsters include hundreds of parking attendants, club kids and shopgirls.
Teams on any given assignment are given code names. When Samuels was shadowing some of the paps, the group of eight Brazilians following Spears was called MBF, using the first initials of the team’s three leaders. They said they logged over 40,000 hours watching Spears.
X17 estimates its take from the sale of Spears-related images last year to be $3 million, or 25 percent of the company’s entire gross revenue.
Bidding on eBay for a photographer’s Ford Explorer after a bald-headed Spears attacked it with an umbrella hit a high of $40,000 before the shutterbug decided to take it off the market.

Lutfi “Respects Britney,” Will Stay Away
Sam Lutfi wants out of the increasingly harsh limelight for awhile.
A court commissioner signed off Monday on the agreement his camp brokered last week with Britney Spears’ family to extend the temporary restraining order against him for another month.
“He respects Britney, he respects the temporary restraining order and everyone is beating him up for no reason,” Lutfi’s rep, Michael Sands, said after the hearing. “Enough is enough.”
Lutfi, who dodged process servers for several weeks after the order was first granted to Jamie and Lynne Spears on Feb. 1, will continue to stay at least 250 yards away from Britney and any property she owns until Apr. 16.
A federal judge had previously extended the order on Feb. 21, the day Lutfi was finally served.
The singer’s erstwhile BFF has been the target of serious accusations from Britney’s parents since her Jan. 31 hospitalization at UCLA Medical Center.
Lynne Spears has alleged that Lutfi drugged Britney by adding crushed, unspecified pills into her food, an issue the Los Angeles Police Department has taken into consideration for a formal investigation. Jamie Spears’ attorneys have stated in court documents that his daughter’s pal hit up her since-fired business manager, Howard Grossman, for money.
Lutfi admitted to giving Britney a handful of pills on Jan. 30, claiming that they “worked wonders” on the troubled songstress, who sources said wasn’t sleeping and was displaying erratic, anxious behavior in the days leading up to her week-long stay at UCLA.
Britney’s medical issues and finances were also discussed Monday, albeit in a closed courtroom.
“Orders were submitted and will be considered about her medical condition, but privacy issues require these remain sealed,” Superior Court spokesman Allan Parachini told E! News.
A hearing on the 730 psych evaluation Goetz ordered to help determine Britney’s ability to make decisions that are currently under the control of her coconservators has been scheduled for Apr. 17, the day after the court is set to revisit the Lutfi affair.

Britney Spears' friend Osama "Sam" Lutfi has filed papers objecting to the Superior Court commissioner assigned to the pop star's conservatorship case.
Lutfi filed the papers Friday, but was not present for a hearing Monday at which Commissioner Reva Goetz extended a temporary restraining order against him until April 16.
His one-sentence filing said: "Please take notice that Osama "Sam" Lutfi will not stipulate to the above-referenced case being heard by Reva Goetz, commissioner presiding, to whom the above-entitled case has been assigned."
The document was signed and indicated Lutfi was representing himself.
Although the document was filed Friday, it did not reach the courtroom in time for Monday's hearing, Superior Court spokesman Allan Parachini said Tuesday.
Parachini said Lutfi can appear in court on April 16 to ask for the case to be reassigned to a judge.
Commissioners perform many of the same duties as judges, but all parties have to agree to a commissioner hearing a case.

Britney Spears' visit to How I Met Your Mother certainly has brought some quick buzz to the post-strike season. The March 24 issue of TV Guide went behind the scenes to get the scoop on the pop star's surprise sitcom gig; the exclusive cover story with posed Josh Radnor/Brit pic will be on newsstands this week (watch a clip of Britney and Neil Patrick Harris' Barney here).Talking to the Mother cast last Thursday at their return party, it became clear that each wanted a "piece" of her — or, at least, admired the pieces she brought to the show.Jason Segel gushed, "She was just unbelievable. She had her lines memorized, jokes ready, and she killed it. And she's beautiful." Neil Patrick Harris, meanwhile, was surprised that Spears agreed to come on the show at all. After being ordered on Monday to pay more of Kevin Federline's legal fees, the conservators for Britney Spears are wasting no time tightening her purse strings.During Monday's hearing, Commissioner Goetz authorized Jamie Spears and co-conservator, Andrew Wallet, to sell a few of brit's cars. The exact makes and models were not available and it's not clear how many of the singer's cars will be sold. But just for fun, let's think: there's the white Mini-Coup, the grey Audi, the black Mercedes, the white Mercedes and at least two leased black Escalades...Co-conservator Andrew Wallet made the request today in court. Britney's court appointed attorney, Sam Ingham, was also there. His response to the request: "I have no objection to that."Meanwhile, the commish also signed off on an extension to the conservator's restraining order against Sam Lutfi. The order remains in effect until April 16. As OK! reported yesterday, the request was granted swiftly and without a showdown because Sam reportedly agreed to having the order extended. Apparantly he thinks it's best for both him and the Britster.And, our reaction to that, as it was yesterday, is: UH-HUH!

The 26-year-old pop singer, whose attorney did not object the request, has nine vehicles, according to her driving-without-a-license lawyer, Michael Flanagan.Also, the restraining order against Sam Lutfi has been extended to April 16.Other issues discussed today include Brit's medical and financial situations. Details are trickling in on Britney Spears' upcoming How I Met Your Mother drop-by. Series creator Craig Thomas tells Us that in the as-yet-unscheduled episode, Spears will set her sights on no less than Ted Mosby, Architect himself. Playing the assistant to the dermatologist (originally Alicia Silverstone, now Scrubs' Sarah Chalke) tasked with removing Ted's embarassing butterfly tat, Spears' character falls hard for the patient but "keeps on screwing up, saying awkward things." Meanwhile, "Ted’s absolutely oblivious. Go, Josh Radnor — he has Britney Spears chasing after him!"Spears arrived with little baggage and nary an entourage, says Thomas, when she showed for Monday morning's table read. Federal officials investigate claim Britney Spears is being unlawfully held by parents
Britney Spears' turbulent life is being probed by federal government officials following claims she is being illegally held by her parents. Senior government security experts are secretly investigating decisions concerning the troubled star made by Commisioner Riva Goetz at The La Superior Court in recent weeks.Aside from the government probe, Britney's unofficial lawyer Jon Eardley is filing papers to Goetz's superiors at the LA Court Of Appeal tomorrow ( March 17) in a bid to end Britney's conservatorship.One of America's top legal eagles William McGovern - a UCLA Professor - has penned a four-page submission, challenging several legal aspects of Goetz's ruling on Britney's health. His key argument is that Jamie restricts visitors to Spears, meaning she cannot meet with lawyers to build a case to prove she is fit enough to handle her own affairs.Eardley says Britney was denied the legal right to appeal her dad's conservatorship – and claims, as a former bankrupt chef, Jamie should not have power over his daughter's £50m fortune.Last night Michael Sands, spokesman for Britney's lawyer Jon Eardley, said, "This is less conservatorship and more deceivership. Britney Spears is facing a danger of going bald again, for the troubled singer is losing her hair in clumps.The pop-wreck has long been covering her patchy scalp with wigs and extensions fitted by top Beverly Hills stylist Kim Vo.However, from what is evident of some recent photographs, even though most of her earlier hair are growing back, there are frightening bare areas on top of her head.After seeing rear-view pictures of the 26-year-old star’s head, many hair and scalp experts have warned that she may suffer from a serious condition leaving her permanently bald.According to LA-based Dr Maurice Messler, the ‘Toxic’ star might be suffering from what is called ‘alopecia’�a stress-caused ailment.“It looks like she could be displaying early signs of alopecia. The pop singer “is not allowed in” West Hollywood hot spot Villa, co-owner Vincent Laresca told The New York Times Sunday.
“She came twice, but we don’t want the media circus that would create,” he said of the club, which counts Lindsay Lohan, Justin Timberlake and Leonardo DiCaprio as regulars.
(It’s not the first time Brit’s been given the boot: She is no longer welcome at the West Hollywood Hustler store after she stripped down to her skivvies in the middle of the store and walked off with a wig.)
Since her father took over as her co-conservator earlier this year, clubbing seems to be the last thing on Brit’s brain.
She’s been teaching children’s dance classes at North Hollywood’s Millennium Dance Complex. Last week, she filmed a role on the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, airing March 24, and she dined with Oscar-winning actor Mel Gibson on Saturday night.
