The plan to save Britney Spears’ fortune

There’s some belt-tightening going on in the Britney Spears camp, but it’s not because Spears is going broke or was recently told to pay Kevin Federline’s attorneys $375,000. The reason is that Britney Spears’ conservators and advisors want to make sure that Spears and her two kids, Sean Preston and Jayden James, can have everything they need. “If Britney Spears never goes back to work, there is no reason she and her kids shouldn’t be able to live a very comfortable life with the kind of money she has in the bank,” said a source close to the Spears family. As for what Spears has in the bank, it’s not as much as what’s been reported. “Those figures of $100 million or more were so off the mark,” a Spears source told OK! magazine. Best estimates for her net worth are in the $40 million range, according to several people with knowledge of Spears’ finances. The cutbacks in spending are widespread, according to OK!, who estimates that she’ll go from a “budget” of $100,000 a month on entertainment and vacations to 10 percent of that; her $16,000-a-month clothing allowance will get halved; and as of April 1, Spears will let go of her $30,000-a-month Malibu home she hasn’t been to in months. “It’s taken a huge team to bring some normalcy out of the chaos that existed,” the source told the magazine. “This team will have to be in place for years.”

Lutfi Looks to Oust Britney Commish

Sam Lutfi is getting with the program. He wouldn't mind changing the channel, though.Despite having agreed to an extension of the restraining order mandating he stay away at least 250 yards away from Britney Spears, Lutfi filed a motion Friday objecting to the Los Angeles court commissioner who's presiding over the case. "Sam did agree to a 30-day extension of the restraining order," Lutfi spokesman Michael Sands told E! News on Tuesday. "However, Sam Lutfi is not stipulating to Commissioner [Reva] Goetz. If need be, Lutfi can be heard in front of a Los Angeles Superior Court judge." (View the notice.) Lutfi, who sources have said was involved in the recent effort to get Spears' conservatorship case moved to federal court, would be willing to appear in court on April 16—the temporary restraining order's new expiration date—to state his position. "There's nothing out of the ordinary that Sam is doing," Sands insisted. "No person has to agree to a commissioner hearing the case. A commissioner is not a judge. If need be, and if this is going to go on, unfortunately, then [Lutfi wants it] heard in front of a judge. Basically, I just believe that Sam would like all of this to go away." While a commissioner performs many of the same actions as a judge—a commissioner is also overseeing Spears and Kevin Federline's custody issues—all sides involved have to agree to it. Sands maintains that the continued scrutiny Lutfi has been subjected to since Jamie and Lynne Spears sought to keep him away from their daughter is unfair. "I personally have been in touch with LAPD, mental health experts and paramedics who were at the home the night [Jan. 31] of the UCLA intervention," Sands said. "They all gave Sam Lutfi five stars for orchestrating and participating in getting Britney to UCLA." "I believe that if Sam brought his witnesses to court, need be, it would take the wind out of the conservators' sails," the rep added. "We all should just take it down and just have peace and harmony and everybody be left alone. Let it go away quietly." In her argument in favor of a restraining order, Lynne Spears filed a declaration last month alleging that Lutfi drugged her daughter, "essentially moved into her home" and went to great lengths to control her life. Spears Sparks New Rules at UCLA Medical Center

Last week there were reports that UCLA Medical Center was seriously considering terminating at least 13 employees and suspending another 6 physicians for snooping through Britney Spears' confidential files. Not only has the hospital stood by their word (12 employees were fired) they are also setting new rules and regulations "to enhance patient privacy and confidentiality", reports the Los Angeles Times newspaper. All cell phones and laptops are officially banned from the hospital in order to avoid patient information getting leaked. We're surprised that from the 20+ employees that were caught snooping through her files, there was no juicy information leaked.

Britney To Play Joan Of Arc?

The Mel Gibson-Britney Spears meeting last week was very mysterious. Was it pop fiction? Are they friends? Well apparently they're collaborating on a new movie. Mel wants to recreate the 1928 movie The Passion of Joan of Arc, and thinks Brit is prefect for the part of Joan. The original movie details the last hours of Joan of Arc after she has been captured by the English. It goes through her trial, torturing, and execution. Wonder what made Mel think Brit can pull this off? 2007 was kind of a crazy year for her, but she was being herself, not acting.

Brit's Psych Ward -- No Cells, No Laptops!

The UCLA psych hospital where Britney Spears spent a 5150 stint earlier this year is now officially a cellphone- and laptop-free zone, after patient photos popped up on the 'net.It doesn't look like any of the snaps, which appeared on an unnamed "social networking" site, are of the Britwreck, reports the L.A. Times. Still, the hospital is concerned that even though the psych patients supposedly gave their consent to be photographed, they "might not be well-reasoned or fully competent" enough to know what they were getting themselves into. Dr. Thomas Strouse, the medical director of the Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital, says in a statement that patients will still have access to landlines. The ban actually went into effect March 3, before it was reported that UCLA canned at least 13 workers and suspended six others for snooping in Brit's medical records. The hospital stresses that the two incidents aren't related.

Brit-Brit's Rocky Mountain Retreat

Heads up, Britney watchers: The troubled pop tart has just been spotted in Colorado — by Stan Marsh and Kyle Broflovski! That’s right — just days after taping an episode How I Met Your Mother — Britney Spears, 27, will make an appearance on South Park.OK, maybe not the real Britney, but that shouldn’t stop fans and foes alike from tuning in to see how the animated Comedy Central series skewers her.
Earlier this week, the network hinted that the episode (airing today at 10 p.m. ET) would reflect the ever-expanding media circus surrounding the often addled single mom:“Britney Spears is trying to get away from it all in the mountains near South Park, Colo., when the boys have a run-in with her. Stan and Kyle get caught up in Britney's celebrity and the never-ending feeding frenzy that follows her wherever she goes.” What we want to know is, will Britney hook up with Kenny?

They Drink Your Milkshake

The Spears family continued in their bid to become the 21st century Beverly Hillbillies last night by popping in to Paradise Cove Beach Cafe in Malibu. On the menu are mouthwatering dishes like Bloody Mary Shrimp Gazpacho (which you know Britney chowed down on), the "Best Lobster Dinner in Town" (that's a direct quote — and we imagine it's Jamie's favorite), Drunken Sterling Salmon (lookin' at you, Lynne) and the Gigantic Iced Seafood Display — fun for the whole family to share!

Sitcom Guy Keeps Scoring Hot Chicks

She followed in the footsteps of one famous blonde, and now she's paving the way for another.
Vanessa Minnillo, who left hosting gigs with MTV and Entertainment Tonight to pursue an acting career, appears on tonight's episode of How I Met Your Mother — too bad Britney Spears stole her thunder!
The 27-year-old, perhaps best known for being Nick Lachey's lady, makes out with Josh Radnor's Ted (above), the same fella that Brit's character falls for on her episode, next week.
At least Vanessa can feel better knowing that Spears is getting her sloppy seconds!

Someone's Pimping Britney's Ride

TMZ has obtained documents in the Britney Spears conservatorship case, and what's clear is that Brit has too many wheels spinning.
The commissioner signed an order giving the co-conservators the power to sell some of Brit's cars. And get this, the Britster owns seven -- count them -- seven cars. According to the documents, the cost of maintaining the vehicles is steep, what with insurance, maintenance and storage costs. The conservators say selling some of the rides "will save substantial expenses to the conservatorship estate."The company that will sell the cars is going to make a sweet 5% commission.

Britney Spears Dines With Parents

Britney Spears joined her mom Lynne and her co-conservator father Jamie for a bite to eat at the Paradise Cove Beach Café in Malibu, California, last night.
The singer, 26, donned a sleeveless white eyelet dress and brown boots for the All-American meal (the menu for the beachfront diner includes seafood and burgers).
After dining, the crew piled into an SUV, with Jamie sitting in the front seat.
Lynne — who recently visited her daughter on the set of CBS’ How I Met Your Mother — threw a red coat over Britney’s head to shield her from photographers. (On Monday, Lynne spent St. Patrick's Day with her grandchildren, Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 17 months.)

Britney on a Budget

After years of spending her millions on vacations and dead-of-night shopping sprees, Britney Spears has been put on a tight budget by a team of advisers. "Britney was never worth nearly as much as many thought she was," a source close to the pop diva tells OK! exclusively. "Those figures of $100 million or more were so off the mark." In fact, the best estimate for her net worth is $40 million. Brit's team wants to preserve her fortune so she is comfortable and can support her kids, Sean Preston and Jayden James, even without any additional income. The source says, "There's going to be some serious belt-tightening." The estimated $100,000 a month she'd spend on entertainment and vacations may be cut to 10% of that, and her $16,000-a-month clothing allowance will get halved. OK! has learned that as of April 1, she will let go of her $30,000-a-month Malibu pad that she hasn't visited in months. Brit's dad, Jamie Spears, cut off her credit cards when he became her conservator. He and attorney Andrew Wallet are in charge of her estate. Her brother, Bryan, and another attorney manage the fund that administers her daily spending. Now, the main financial drain is legal fees, round-the-clock security and medical costs. "It's taken a huge team to bring some normalcy out of the chaos that existed," the source says. "This team will have to be in place for years." The medical team alone usually has seven doctors and therapists. The legal team handles her finances, custody of her kids and the restraining order against Sam Lutfi. "Her legal bills alone could top $1 million this year," another insider familiar with the situation tells OK!.

Spears' friend Lutfi Objects to Court Commissioner

Britney Spears' friend Osama "Sam" Lutfi has filed papers objecting to the Superior Court commissioner assigned to the pop star's conservatorship case.
Lutfi filed the papers Friday, but was not present for a hearing Monday at which Commissioner Reva Goetz extended a temporary restraining order against him until April 16.
His one-sentence filing said: "Please take notice that Osama "Sam" Lutfi will not stipulate to the above-referenced case being heard by Reva Goetz, commissioner presiding, to whom the above-entitled case has been assigned."
The document was signed and indicated Lutfi was representing himself.
Although the document was filed Friday, it did not reach the courtroom in time for Monday's hearing, Superior Court spokesman Allan Parachini said Tuesday.
Parachini said Lutfi can appear in court on April 16 to ask for the case to be reassigned to a judge.
Commissioners perform many of the same duties as judges, but all parties have to agree to a commissioner hearing a case.
Michael Sands, a spokesman for Lutfi, said during the weekend that Lutfi agreed to abide by the terms of the restraining order for another month.
The order directs Lutfi to stay at least 250 yards away from the pop star and her homes.
The order was requested by Spears' mother, Lynne, when Spears was hospitalized on a psychiatric hold at UCLA Medical Center.
